How Long Does Horse Cremation Take?

Individual horse cremation typically takes most of a working day in the chamber, plus a cooling period before the ashes can be collected and prepared. From the owner's point of view the number that matters is the return: ashes are usually back with you within 5-7 business days of collection, and Alby delivers them personally wherever distance allows.

The timeline, step by step
Every stage is recorded against a numbered stainless SafeHarbour tag, so at any point we can tell you exactly where your horse is in the process.
- Collection — same day or next morning in most of our service area.
- Arrival and identification — the SafeHarbour tag is recorded and photographed against your horse's details.
- Cremation — most of a working day in the chamber, alone, followed by a cooling period.
- Preparation — ashes are collected, prepared and placed into the urn or timber memorial you chose.
- Keepsakes and certificate — tail or mane hair, a hoof keepsake if requested, and a signed Certificate of Individual Cremation.
- Return — usually within 5-7 business days of collection, delivered to you in person.
Why does a horse take longer than a dog?
Mass, simply. A 500kg horse requires a purpose-built large-animal chamber and a far longer cycle than a companion animal, then a proportionally longer cooling period before anything can be handled.
The volume of ashes is also much greater — commonly 8 to 15 kilograms for a horse — so preparation takes longer and the urn choices are different from those offered for pets.
Can you work to a particular date?
Yes. If there is a memorial, a family gathering, a stud open day or a flight you are working around, tell us at booking and we will do our best to meet that date.
Equally, if you are not ready for your horse to come home yet, we will hold the ashes for as long as you need at no charge. That happens often and there is nothing unusual about it.
Can I follow the process?
Yes. Every owner receives a private tracking page showing each stage as it is completed, from collection through to return, so you are never left wondering or chasing an answer by phone.
