Planning ahead: a calm guide to equine end-of-life in NSW and SE Queensland

How to prepare quietly and well for a horse's final day — paddock access, vet coordination, and what a dignified collection actually looks like.

In short

Equine end-of-life is far gentler when planned in advance. Confirm float access to the paddock, coordinate with your vet on timing, and book a private collection through Harbourside on 0493 814 474. We cover Brisbane to the Southern Highlands and west to Tamworth and the Hunter.

For horse families, the hardest part is often not the day itself but the not-knowing — who to call, where they will go, whether they will be treated with the dignity a horse deserves. This guide is here to make that part quieter.

Before the day

  • Walk your paddock with float access in mind — soft ground, clear gates, a turning circle.
  • Speak with your vet about timing windows that suit both you and the herd.
  • Decide who will be present. Some families want quiet; some want everyone.
  • Consider what comes home with them — a halter, a lock of mane, hoof prints in clay.

On the day

We arrive in an unmarked, purpose-built float. There is no hurry. You will have time to say goodbye in whatever way feels right — a brushed mane, a final apple, a few words alone.

After the day

Your horse is transported privately to our dedicated equine facility. SafeHarbour Verification means every step is documented — collection, transport, identification, cremation, and return — so you always know exactly where they are.

Questions families often ask

Do you offer individual equine cremation?

Yes. Every horse is cremated individually in our dedicated equine chamber — never with another animal.

How far do you travel for horses?

Brisbane down through Northern NSW to the Southern Highlands, and west to Tamworth, the Hunter Valley and the New England region.

Can we be present on the day?

Absolutely. Many families find it deeply important to be there for the collection. There is no rush and no schedule pressure.

  • They dropped everything to be here the day I lost my boy.

I could not recommend Alby and Rachael highly enough to take care of your beloved fur family. The empathy and support they provide is second to none. They made an already difficult process so reassuring. And I trusted them to take the best of care of my boy.…

  • Treated with such kindness from the very first call.

Alby and the Harbourside team were so kind and compassionate when we lost our beloved Lydian. From the first phone call we felt looked after — nothing was rushed, nothing was outsourced, and every detail was handled with such care. Having him returned home to…

  • They understood she was family, not ‘just a bird’.

Our cockatiel Pippa was with us for 18 years — through three house moves, two kids growing up, and every morning coffee on the verandah. When she passed I was nervous about ringing around because some places really do treat small pets like an afterthought.…
