Charlie

Charlie was my best friend. He came into my life at just four weeks old and filled my heart with so much joy.

He was an absolute terror when he was younger. It didn't matter how many bells he had on his collar, he still managed to catch lizards, birds, wild rabbits, snakes, and even once dragged a goanna into the house. He was completely fearless.

That fearlessness eventually led to him becoming a house cat with a large outdoor enclosure, where he could sit and watch the world instead of trying to hunt and kill everything in it, an arrangement he only begrudgingly accepted. Even then, he never lost his adventurous spirit.

Charlie was always his mumma's cat. He tolerated the kids, but only just! Heaven forbid someone he didn't know well came too close, they risked getting swiped if he had the chance. Visiting dogs, no matter how big they were, would cower around him. Charlie took great pleasure in bluffing and tormenting them, deliberately getting in their way and refusing to let them pass.

There was, however, one exception. His other best friend was our Labrador, Gordon. Every single night they would snuggle up together, often with Gordon's front leg draped protectively over Charlie. Their friendship was one of the sweetest things I've ever witnessed.

On the last day of Charlie's life, he collapsed and was unable to move. I went outside to call the vet, and when I turned around, there he was. Somehow, he had gathered every ounce of strength he had left to come out to his mumma.

I picked him up and held him while he gazed around the property he had called home. I told him what was happening, and I truly believe he understood. It felt as though he was taking everything in one last time, saying goodbye.

He then wanted to be put down, so I gently placed him on the ground. With remarkable determination, he made his way to the garden, where he sat quietly looking around once more. It felt like a final farewell. Then he turned toward me as if to say, "It's time now."

I carried him back inside, where he collapsed again and never moved after that, even when the vet arrived a few hours later. Charlie knew it was his time to go, and like everything else in his life, he did it on his own terms.

My heart is broken, and sometimes the pain of losing both my fur babies feels almost impossible to bear. I miss him more than words can say. But I take comfort in the countless funny, mischievous, and loving memories he left behind.

We only lost our precious Gordon in November, and I like to think that Charlie is now reunited with his favourite buddy. Somewhere in heaven, they are curled up together once again, just as they always were, peaceful, happy, and never far apart.

Forever loved. Forever missed. My beautiful boy, Charlie.
